Previous studies have found a higher proportion of alien plant species along the coastal area of the Black Sea. The goals
of the present study were to assess the role of two harbours as gateways and reservoirs for alien plant species, to compare
the structure and invasion pattern of the alien plants recorded there, and test methods useful for effective monitoring programs.
We inventoried 12 sites along the western Black Sea coast from the harbour of Sulina in the north to Cape Kaliakra in the
south. Each site was visited at least three times each. A more intensive survey was done in the two harbours targeted by our
study: Constanţa and Sulina. The proportion of neophytes was higher in the harbours (representing about one third of the total
plant species) and lower in coastal protected areas (with an average proportion of 6.7%). Species accumulation curves and
estimators of species richness indicated that while the plant inventory was not complete, invasive alien species (IAS) were
adequately inventoried. Harbours act not only as gateways for IAS but also as reservoirs, facilitating their acclimatization
and naturalization. The use of species accumulation curves and estimators of species richness are useful tools in designing
and evaluating simple monitoring programs based on repeated inventories. Our study has stressed the importance of monitoring

Honeybees, Apis mellifera, have several prophylactic disease defense strategies, including the foraging of antibiotic, antifungal, and antiviral compounds of plant products. Hence, honey and pollen contain many compounds that prevent fungal and bacterial growth and inhibit viral replication. Since these compounds are also fed to the larvae by nurse bees, they play a central role for colony health inside the hive. Here, we show that honeybee nurse bees, infected with the microsporidian gut parasite Nosema ceranae, show different preferences for various types of honeys in a simultaneous choice test. Infected workers preferred honeys with a higher antibiotic activity that reduced the microsporidian infection after the consumption of the honey. Since nurse bees feed not only the larvae but also other colony members, this behavior might be a highly adaptive form of therapeutic medication at both the individual and the colony level. 相似文献

A better public perception and knowledge on land degradation increases the individual and collective responsibility in land use and land management. Based on interviews, this paper presents results of evaluation of public perception and attitude towards degrading phenomena in the central part of Romania, an area prone to geomorphologic processes, with different land uses and a high proportion of degraded land. The research reveals natural causes, improper land use, categories of land owned, socio-economic causes and involvement of institutions as key aspects of public perception. Air quality modeling is useful for characterizing exposures to air pollutants. Whereas models typically provide results on regional scales, new concerns regarding the potential for differential exposures among racial/ethnic populations and income strata within communities are driving the need for increasingly refined modeling approaches. These approaches need to be capable of resolving concentrations on the scale of tens of meters, across modeling domains 10-100 km2 in size. One approach for refined air quality modeling is to combine Gaussian and regional photochemical grid models. In this paper, the authors demonstrate this approach on a case study of Wilmington, CA, focused on diesel exhaust particulate matter. Modeling results suggest that pollutant concentrations in the vicinity of emission sources are elevated, and, therefore, an understanding of local emission sources is necessary to generate credible modeling results. A probabilistic evaluation of the Gaussian model application indicated that spatial allocation, emission rates, and meteorological data are important contributors to input and parameter uncertainty in the model results. This uncertainty can be substantially reduced through the collection and integration of site-specific information about the location of emission sources and the activity and emission rates of key sources affecting model concentrations. 相似文献
